A new episode for the reimagined series, Explainomics.

MarketWatch is fresh off a full identity redesign and campaign with Mother Design, built around a sharp concept: empowering people to grow their money through long-term patience and strategy. It’s not flashy or gimmicky. It’s stable and calculated — but it doesn’t feel like your grandparents' financial magazine either. It's clearly made for a new generation. The colors, type, and layouts are electric, pulling directly from rave posters, of all things. I spent a lot of time in their 110-page brand guidelines (a genuine favorite pastime of mine) and learned a lot from how tightly the system holds together.
I've been designing for the series since I was a staffer at MarketWatch nearly ten years ago, and I originally set the art direction for the series. It looks nothing like it did back then — a good thing! — and it's been genuinely cool to watch the brand grow, and a privilege to work on it through every stage. My earliest videos for the series leaned on textures, saturated greens, and tinted or black-and-white image treatments — elements that are happily back in the mix now, but punched up in an exciting new way. It's also wild to see how far the production pipeline has come: I used to trace stock charts by hand, and now the Illustrator-to-After-Effects templates do work I couldn't have imagined a decade ago.
At the start of the project, the team hands off a polished script, with notes on what data to feature and what headlines to pull, along with standup footage of Ellie (the host) and Venessa Wong (reporter). From there, the rest is mine: I create custom graphics to advance the story and clarify complex concepts, pull stock footage from Getty Images to fill in the gaps, and source music from APM to keep the rhythm going. I move back and forth between Premiere and After Effects until the finished video has made its way through 2–3 rounds of review and final approval — all in the span of just two short weeks. It's a pleasure to work with such a well-oiled machine, every single time.
